Unit Converter: Every Conversion Formula That Matters

Use our free Unit Converter to convert between metric, imperial, and US customary units across length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, and more — instantly.

Why Unit Conversion Matters More Than You Think

On September 23, 1999, NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter — a spacecraft costing $327 million — was destroyed. The cause: one engineering team used metric units (newton-seconds), another used imperial (pound-force seconds). The software never converted between them.

Less dramatically but more personally: if you're a fitness tracker user, a home cook following a foreign recipe, an engineer reading imported specifications, or a patient calculating medication dosage, you're navigating unit conversions constantly. Getting them right matters.

The Two Systems: Why Both Exist and Why You Need Both

The Metric System (SI — International System of Units): Used by: the entire world for science, medicine, and officially by 195 countries. Base units are meters, kilograms, liters, seconds, and Celsius. Everything scales by powers of 10 (kilo = 1,000, centi = 1/100, milli = 1/1,000).

The Imperial/US Customary System: Used primarily by: the United States for everyday use, and the UK for some everyday measurements (miles for roads, pints for beer). Units like miles, pounds, gallons, feet, and Fahrenheit.

India's position: India officially uses the metric system for all legal and commercial purposes since 1957. However, informal usage of older units persists — especially in real estate (yards, cents, grounds, guntas, bighas) and some agricultural contexts. The unit converter is essential when dealing with local land records that use non-metric area measurements.

The Essential Conversions by Category

1 inchcentimeters2.54
1 footmeters0.3048
1 yardmeters0.9144

Everyday uses:

Weight / Mass

FromToMultiply By
1 pound (lb)kilograms0.453592
1 kilogrampounds2.20462
1 ounce (oz)grams28.3495
1 gramounces0.035274
1 stone (UK)kilograms6.35029
1 tonne (metric)kilograms1,000
1 ton (US short)kilograms907.185

Watch out for: "Ton" has three different meanings — metric tonne (1,000 kg), US short ton (907 kg), and British long ton (1,016 kg). In international trade, always specify which ton you mean.

Medical context: Drug dosages for weight-based medications are typically calculated in mg/kg. If a patient reports weight in pounds, convert to kg first: 150 lbs = 68.04 kg. A 10% error in weight = 10% error in dosage.

Temperature

Temperature is the trickiest conversion because it uses an offset, not just multiplication.

Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = (C × 9/5) + 32 Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F − 32) × 5/9 Celsius to Kelvin: K = C + 273.15

CelsiusFahrenheitContext
0°C32°FWater freezes
20°C68°FRoom temperature
37°C98.6°FHuman body temperature
100°C212°FWater boils
-40°C-40°FThe point where both scales meet

Quick mental estimate (not precise): Double the Celsius, subtract 10%, add 32. Example: 25°C → 25×2=50 → 50−5=45 → 45+32=77°F (actual: 77°F ✓)

Why it matters: US recipes use Fahrenheit for oven temperatures. A recipe calling for 350°F = 175°C. Baking at 350°C instead of 175°C (by confusing the scales) would burn everything in minutes.

Volume

FromToMultiply By
1 US gallonliters3.78541
1 UK gallonliters4.54609
1 literUS gallons0.264172
1 US cupmilliliters236.588
1 tablespoon (US)milliliters14.7868
1 teaspoon (US)milliliters4.92892
1 fluid ounce (US)milliliters29.5735

Critical distinction: The US gallon and UK gallon are different. Fuel economy comparisons between US and UK vehicles must account for this. "30 mpg" in the UK uses UK gallons (30 × 1.201 = 36 US mpg equivalent).

Cooking conversions:

1 cup of flour ≠ 1 cup of sugar ≠ 1 cup of water in grams. A cup is a volume measure; the weight depends on density. This is why baking by weight is more accurate than baking by volume.

Area

FromToMultiply By
1 sq footsq meters0.0929
1 sq metersq feet10.7639
1 acresq meters4,046.86
1 hectareacres2.47105
1 sq milesq kilometers2.58999

Indian land measurement units (regional):

UnitEquivalent
1 Guntha101.17 sq meters
1 Acre40 Gunthas = 4,047 sq meters
1 Bigha (UP/Bihar)~2,529 sq meters (varies by state)
1 Ground (Chennai)203 sq meters (5.5 cents)
1 Cent40.47 sq meters (1/100 acre)
1 Marla (Punjab)25.2929 sq meters

Bigha in particular varies significantly by state — always specify which state's bigha you mean when dealing with land records.

Speed

FromToMultiply By
1 mphkm/h1.60934
1 km/hmph0.62137
1 knotkm/h1.852
1 m/skm/h3.6

Quick reference: 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph. Speed limit signs in the UK and USA are in mph; India and most of the world use km/h.

Where Unit Errors Have Real Consequences

Cooking and Baking

A recipe calling for 1 cup of butter is 227 grams. Using 1 cup of olive oil is 218 grams — similar. But 1 cup of flour is only 120–130 grams, while 1 cup of sugar is 200 grams. Treating all cups as equal in weight destroys the chemistry of baking.

For overseas recipes: always check if "tablespoon" means US tablespoon (14.8 ml), UK tablespoon (17.7 ml), or metric tablespoon (15 ml). It's a 20% difference in the UK version.

Construction and Home Improvement

Flooring, tile, and carpet are sold in either square feet or square meters depending on the supplier. Buying in the wrong unit leads to either surplus (wasted money) or shortage (job can't be completed).

Plumbing fittings are measured in inches (imperial) in the US and India, but European fittings use metric. Mixing them causes leaks.

Lumber in the US is sold in nominal dimensions that are different from actual dimensions: a "2×4" board is actually 1.5 inches × 3.5 inches.

Medical and Pharmaceutical

Weight-based dosing errors are one of the most common causes of medication errors in hospitals. Pediatric doses especially depend on precise weight in kilograms.

Insulin is measured in units (IU), not mg or ml — a completely different scale. "100 units" of insulin per ml is the standard concentration. Drawing 0.5 ml gives 50 units, not 0.5 mg. This distinction is literally life or death.

FAQ

What is the easiest way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head?
Multiply by 2, subtract 10%, add 32. Example: 30°C → 60 → 54 → 86°F. The precise answer is 86°F, so this shortcut works well.
How many feet in a meter?
1 meter = 3.28084 feet. A quick approximation: 1 meter ≈ 3 feet 3 inches.
What is 1 kg in pounds?
1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. A quick approximation: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs.
Why does India still use non-metric units for land?
India officially adopted the metric system in 1957, but regional land measurement units like bigha, guntha, ground, cent, and marla remain in use because land records were historically maintained in these units and conversion creates administrative complications. The specific conversion values vary by state.
What is the difference between a US gallon and a UK gallon?
A US gallon is 3.785 liters; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 liters — about 20% larger. This affects fuel economy comparisons between US and UK vehicles.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply square feet by 0.0929. Example: 1,000 sq ft = 92.9 sq meters. Or divide sq feet by 10.764.
