Watch out for: "Ton" has three different meanings — metric tonne (1,000 kg), US short ton (907 kg), and British long ton (1,016 kg). In international trade, always specify which ton you mean.

Critical distinction: The US gallon and UK gallon are different. Fuel economy comparisons between US and UK vehicles must account for this. "30 mpg" in the UK uses UK gallons (30 × 1.201 = 36 US mpg equivalent).

Where Unit Errors Have Real Consequences
Cooking and Baking
A recipe calling for 1 cup of butter is 227 grams. Using 1 cup of olive oil is 218 grams — similar. But 1 cup of flour is only 120–130 grams, while 1 cup of sugar is 200 grams. Treating all cups as equal in weight destroys the chemistry of baking.
For overseas recipes: always check if "tablespoon" means US tablespoon (14.8 ml), UK tablespoon (17.7 ml), or metric tablespoon (15 ml). It's a 20% difference in the UK version.
Construction and Home Improvement
