PART 1: PAINT COST CALCULATOR

Paint Coverage and Quantity Formula

Paint Required (litres) = Total Area (sq ft) ÷ Coverage per litre × Number of coats

Standard coverage rates:

Paint TypeCoverage per LitreCoats Typically Needed
Interior emulsion (standard)140–160 sq ft2 coats
Interior emulsion (premium)130–150 sq ft2 coats
Exterior weather coat100–120 sq ft2 coats
Primer / wall putty80–100 sq ft1–2 coats
Enamel / gloss100–120 sq ft2 coats
Distemper (budget)120–150 sq ft2 coats

Step 1: Calculate Paintable Area

Total paintable area = (All wall areas + ceiling area) − (Door and window areas)

Room calculation: Wall area = Perimeter × Height = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height Ceiling area = Length × Width

Standard deductions:

Example — 12' × 10' room, 10' ceiling height: Wall area = 2 × (12 + 10) × 10 = 440 sq ft Ceiling area = 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft Deductions: 1 door (21 sq ft) + 2 windows (24 sq ft) = 45 sq ft Net paintable area = 440 + 120 − 45 = 515 sq ft

PART 2: TILE CALCULATOR

Tile Quantity Formula

Tiles needed = (Room area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + Wastage factor)

Wastage factors by laying pattern:

PatternWastage FactorDescription
Straight lay (parallel to walls)10%Simplest, least waste
Diagonal lay (45°)15–20%More cutting, more waste
Herringbone / chevron20–25%Complex, high waste
Versailles / irregular25–35%Expert only
Large format (60×60, 80×80)12–15%More cuts for edges

Tile Quantity for Common Areas

Standard 60×60 cm tile (2 sq ft per tile), straight lay, 10% wastage:

RoomDimensionsArea (sq ft)Tiles NeededWith Wastage
Master bedroom14' × 12'168 sq ft84 tiles93 tiles
Bedroom 212' × 10'120 sq ft60 tiles66 tiles
Living room18' × 14'252 sq ft126 tiles139 tiles
Kitchen10' × 8'80 sq ft40 tiles44 tiles
Bathroom (floor)8' × 5'40 sq ft20 tiles22 tiles
Bathroom (wall)~80 sq ft40 tiles44 tiles

**For 30×60 cm tiles (2 sq ft per tile — same calculation) For 80×80 cm tiles (6.88 sq ft per tile): 1,000 sq ft ÷ 6.88 × 1.15 = 167 tiles with wastage

FAQ

How do I calculate how much paint I need for one room?
Measure all four walls (length × height for each), add the ceiling (length × width), subtract doors (21 sq ft each) and windows (12 sq ft each). Divide the net area by your paint's coverage per litre (typically 140–150 sq ft). Multiply by number of coats (usually 2). Add 10% wastage. Example: 12×10 room, 10ft ceiling = 515 sq ft net. 515 ÷ 150 × 2 × 1.1 = 7.6 litres needed.
Which tile size is best for Indian homes?
60×60 cm (2×2 ft) is the most popular for living rooms and bedrooms — good coverage, manageable size, widely available. 30×60 cm works well for smaller rooms and bathrooms. Large format (80×80 or 60×120 cm) creates a premium look but requires experienced laying, flatter floors, and generates more wastage. Bathroom floors: 30×30 or 30×60 for grip and visual balance.
Why should I order extra tiles?
Batch matching: tiles are made in kilns where colour varies slightly between firings. A tile ordered from a new batch months later may not match exactly. Also: breakage during transport and installation, future replacements for damaged tiles years later. Order 10–15% extra and store the surplus — it's far cheaper than finding matching tiles later and paying for re-laying.
What is the difference between ceramic and vitrified tiles?
Ceramic tiles are clay-based, porous, and softer — cheaper but less durable, stain more easily. Vitrified tiles are denser, harder, less porous, and more scratch-resistant — made at higher temperatures with silica and quartz added. For Indian homes with heavy foot traffic, vitrified tiles are standard for floors. Ceramic is often used for bathroom walls where durability requirements are lower.
