A fraction says: "this piece is part of a whole." 3/4 means 3 parts out of 4 equal parts.
A ratio says: "these two quantities compare this way to each other." 3:1 means for every 3 of A, there is 1 of B.

Multiplying Fractions
Rule: Multiply numerators together, multiply denominators together. No common denominator needed.
Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = 1/2
Practical use: A recipe serves 4 and calls for 2/3 cup of sugar. You're making half the recipe (1/2 of the recipe). Sugar needed = 2/3 × 1/2 = 1/3 cup.
Dividing Fractions
Rule: Flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal), then multiply.
"Keep, Change, Flip" — Keep the first fraction, Change division to multiplication, Flip the second fraction.
Example: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1.5

Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it.

1. Recipe Scaling
A recipe serving 4 uses: 300g flour, 200ml milk, 2 eggs, 150g sugar.
You want to serve 10. Scale factor = 10/4 = 2.5
- Flour: 300 × 2.5 = 750g
- Milk: 200 × 2.5 = 500ml
- Eggs: 2 × 2.5 = 5 eggs
- Sugar: 150 × 2.5 = 375g

A map at 1:50,000 scale means 1 cm on the map = 50,000 cm = 500 meters in real life.

4. Investment Portfolio Allocation
A 60:40 portfolio means 60% equities, 40% bonds.
On ₹10 lakh:
- Equities: 60/(60+40) × 10L = 3/5 × 10L = ₹6 lakh
- Bonds: 40/100 × 10L = ₹4 lakh
After market movement, equities grow to ₹7 lakh and bonds to ₹3.8 lakh. New ratio:
- Equities: 7/(7+3.8) = 7/10.8 = 64.8%

5. Financial Ratios in Business Analysis
Business health is measured almost entirely in ratios:
- Price-to-Earnings (P/E): Share price ÷ earnings per share. Market pays ₹25 for every ₹1 of earnings → P/E of 25
- Debt-to-Equity: Total debt ÷ shareholders' equity. A ratio of 2:1 means ₹2 of debt for every ₹1 of equity

Equivalent Fractions: Why They Matter
1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 50/100. These are all the same value — equivalent fractions.
Why it matters practically:
Comparing fractions: Which is bigger, 5/8 or 7/11? Convert both to the same denominator. LCD of 8 and 11 = 88. 5/8 = 55/88. 7/11 = 56/88. 7/11 is slightly larger.
Scaling measurements: A drawing at 1/4 scale. Real dimension is 120mm. Drawing dimension = 120 × 1/4 = 30mm.
Proportion problems: If 5 workers finish a job in 8 days, how long do 4 workers take? Workers × Days = constant. 5 × 8 = 40. 4 × ? = 40. ? = 10 days.
Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
Mixed number: 2 and 3/4 (a whole number plus a fraction) Improper fraction: 11/4 (numerator larger than denominator)
Converting mixed to improper: (whole × denominator + numerator) / denominator 2 and 3/4 = (2×4 + 3)/4 = 11/4
Converting improper to mixed: Divide numerator by denominator. 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3 → 2 and 3/4
Most calculators work with improper fractions internally — always convert mixed numbers to improper before entering them.
Common Fraction Mistakes
1. Adding denominators: 1/3 + 1/4 ≠ 2/7. You must find a common denominator first. Answer: 7/12.
2. Forgetting to simplify: 6/8 is technically correct but 3/4 is the simplified form that's easier to work with.
3. Ratio vs. fraction confusion: A 3:1 cement-to-water ratio doesn't mean 3/1 = 3 cups of cement per cup of water (it does here), but a 3:1 juice-to-water ratio means 3/(3+1) = 75% juice — not 3 times as much juice as the whole drink.
