Exam Percentage & Grade Calculator India: Marks to % and CGPA Conversion
- Exam percentage = (Total marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100. Straightforward — but calculating aggregate percentage across multiple subjects with different max marks requires weighted averaging, not simple averaging.
- Grade calculation in India varies by board: CBSE uses a 9-point grading scale (A1 = 91–100%), ICSE uses letter grades, and most universities use a 10-point CGPA scale with their own grade-to-point mapping.
- Converting CGPA to percentage: UGC formula is CGPA × 9.5, but individual universities have their own multipliers (Anna University uses × 10, VTU uses a different formula). Always use your institution's official conversion.
- Aggregate percentage calculation for competitive exams (JEE, NEET, UPSC eligibility) uses a specific subset of subjects — not all subjects in your marksheet.

Exam Percentage Formula
Single Subject / Single Paper
Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Maximum Marks) × 100
| Marks Obtained | Max Marks | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 78 | 100 | 78.0% |
| 156 | 200 | 78.0% |
| 432 | 600 | 72.0% |
| 67 | 80 | 83.75% |
| 145 | 175 | 82.86% |
Aggregate Percentage: Multiple Subjects
Wrong method (simple average — only correct if all subjects have same max marks): Subject 1: 78/100, Subject 2: 65/80, Subject 3: 92/100 Simple average = (78 + 65 + 92) / 3 = 78.33% ← INCORRECT (different max marks)
Correct method (weighted average): Aggregate % = (Sum of all marks obtained ÷ Sum of all maximum marks) × 100
(78 + 65 + 92) ÷ (100 + 80 + 100) × 100 = 235 ÷ 280 × 100 = 83.93% ← CORRECT
The difference here is 5.6 percentage points — significant enough to change eligibility for many competitive exam cutoffs.
Aggregate for Board Exams (CBSE Class 12)
For JEE/NEET eligibility: 5 principal subjects are considered
CBSE Class 12 with PCM + English + any 5th subject:
- Physics: 87/100
- Chemistry: 79/100
- Mathematics: 93/100
- English: 82/100
- Computer Science: 91/100
Aggregate = (87 + 79 + 93 + 82 + 91) ÷ 500 × 100 = 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4%
JEE Main eligibility: 75% aggregate in Class 12 (or top 20 percentile of respective board) NEET eligibility: 50% aggregate in PCB subjects for general category

CBSE CGPA calculation (Class 10): CGPA = Sum of grade points in 5 main subjects ÷ 5 Percentage equivalent = CGPA × 9.5
University 10-Point Scale (UGC, IITs, NITs, most central/state universities)
| Grade | Grade Point | Typical % Range |
|---|---|---|
| O (Outstanding) | 10 | 90–100% |
| A+ (Excellent) | 9 | 80–89% |
| A (Very Good) | 8 | 70–79% |
| B+ (Good) | 7 | 60–69% |
| B (Above Average) | 6 | 55–59% |
| C (Average) | 5 | 50–54% |

Common University CGPA-to-Percentage Conversion Formulas
| Institution | Official Formula | Example (8.0 CGPA) |
|---|---|---|
| UGC (general guideline) | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
| Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| Mumbai University | Varies by programme | Check handbook |
| VTU (Visvesvaraya) | Specific table | ~70–75% |
| JNTU | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| Pune University | CGPA × 10.84 (approx.) | 86.72% |
| IP University | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
| Amity University | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
Why this matters: Applying for a job that requires "60% in graduation" with a 6.5 CGPA — does this meet the criteria? At UGC formula: 6.5 × 9.5 = 61.75% (yes). At Anna University formula: 6.5 × 10 = 65% (yes). Always use YOUR university's official formula and cite it in applications.
Grade Calculator: What Grade Do You Need?
To achieve a target grade in a subject with internal + external marks:
Formula: Required external marks = (Target grade minimum total − Internal marks secured)
Example: Subject has 30 internal + 70 external = 100 total. You secured 24/30 internal. To get Grade A (70%+): Minimum total needed: 70 Required external = 70 − 24 = 46 out of 70
What percentage of the external exam do you need? 46 ÷ 70 × 100 = 65.7% in the external exam
Required Marks Table: What You Need in Finals
Subject: 30 internal + 70 external, Internal secured: 22/30
| Target Grade | Min % Total | Min Total Marks | Required in External (÷70) | External % Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O (90%) | 90% | 90 | 90 − 22 = 68 | ❌ Impossible (max 70) |
| A+ (80%) | 80% | 80 | 80 − 22 = 58 | 82.9% |
| A (70%) | 70% | 70 | 70 − 22 = 48 | 68.6% |
| B+ (60%) | 60% | 60 | 60 − 22 = 38 | 54.3% |
| B (55%) | 55% | 55 | 55 − 22 = 33 | 47.1% |
| Pass (45%) | 45% | 45 | 45 − 22 = 23 | 32.9% |
This table shows that with 22 internal marks, getting an O grade is impossible — the maximum total with 70/70 external = 22 + 70 = 92% — so O is achievable. But with 15 internal, maximum total = 85, making O (90%+) impossible.
