Engagement Rate Calculator: Formula, Platform Benchmarks & What Good ER Looks Like

Use our free Engagement Rate Calculator to compute ER by followers, by reach, and by impressions — across Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and TikTok.

Engagement Rate Formulas

There are four variants — use the right one for context:

1. ER by Followers (most common for influencer evaluation): ER = (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100

2. ER by Reach (most accurate for content performance): ER = (Total Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100

3. ER by Impressions (for paid content): ER = (Total Engagements ÷ Impressions) × 100

4. ER per Post Average: Average ER = (Sum of ERs for N posts) ÷ N

Worked Examples

Instagram post: Followers: 85,000 | Reach: 42,000 | Likes: 1,800 | Comments: 95 | Saves: 320 Total engagements: 2,215

ER by followers = (2,215 ÷ 85,000) × 100 = 2.61% ER by reach = (2,215 ÷ 42,000) × 100 = 5.27%

Both are correct — they answer different questions. ER by reach is a better measure of content quality; ER by followers is used for influencer benchmarking.

The Value Hierarchy of Engagements

Not all engagements are equal. Here's how to weight them:

Engagement TypeAlgorithm ValueBusiness Value
Saves (Instagram)Very HighHigh (intent signal)
Shares (all platforms)Very HighVery High (earned reach)
CommentsHighHigh (community signal)
LikesMediumLow (passive, easy)
Views (video)MediumMedium
ImpressionsLowLow (no action)

For content creators: Saves are the most valuable Instagram metric. If saves are high, the algorithm shows the post to more people. If comments are high with meaningful discussion, it signals community quality to brands.

For brands evaluating influencers: Comments-to-likes ratio reveals authentic engagement. Accounts with thousands of likes but near-zero comments have often bought likes. Expect roughly 1 comment per 30–50 likes for genuine engagement.

Engagement Rate vs. Reach: The Trade-Off

The fundamental tension in social media strategy:

High ER, Low Reach: Small, loyal audience. Content resonates deeply. Great for community-building and conversion. Poor for awareness campaigns.

Low ER, High Reach: Large audience, low resonance. Content is seen by many but acted on by few. Better for awareness, poor for conversion.

The follower dilution effect: As accounts grow, ER almost always decreases. Not all followers see every post (platform algorithm limits reach to 10–30% of followers organically). New followers are often less engaged than core early followers.

This is why micro-influencers (10K–100K followers) are often more cost-effective for brand partnerships than mega-influencers — higher ER means more genuine interaction per follower.

How to Genuinely Improve Engagement Rate

Content:

  • Post when your audience is most active (use Instagram/Creator Studio insights)
  • Carousels consistently outperform single images on Instagram
  • Ask genuine questions in captions (drives comments)
  • Use Stories to drive DMs (platform promotes DM-heavy accounts)

Timing:

  • Respond to all comments within the first hour of posting — early engagement signals boost algorithmic distribution

Format:

  • Short-form video (Reels, Shorts) gets 2–3× higher ER than static posts on most platforms
  • LinkedIn text-only posts outperform link posts (platform deprioritises external links)

What doesn't work:

  • Comment pods (fake engagement — platforms detect and suppress)
  • Buying likes/followers (destroys ER percentage, damages algorithm standing)
  • Posting too frequently (quality over quantity — 3–4 high-ER posts beat 7 low-ER posts)

FAQ

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in India?
For most accounts: 2–3% ER by followers is average, 3–5% is good, 5%+ is excellent. Indian creator niches like food, travel, and personal finance tend to have higher engagement than fashion or lifestyle. Nano-influencers in Tier-2 cities often see 6–10% ER due to tighter community connections.
How do I calculate average engagement rate across multiple posts?
Calculate ER for each post individually, then average them. Don't sum all engagements and divide by total reach — that gives you the ER of your best post weighted by reach, not the average post performance.
Why is my engagement rate dropping even though I'm posting more?
Posting frequency has diminishing returns. Each post competes with others for your followers' limited attention. More posts = lower average reach per post = lower average ER. Test reducing posting frequency by 30% and see if total engagement per post improves.
What engagement rate do brands look for in influencers?
Most Indian brands set a minimum ER of 2–3% for micro-influencers, 1% for macro-influencers. Agencies use tools like HypeAuditor, Influencer.in, or Modash to verify authentic engagement and filter fake accounts.
