CTR Calculator: Click-Through Rate Formula, Benchmarks & How to Fix Low CTR
- CTR (Click-Through Rate) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100. It measures what percentage of people who saw your ad, email, or link actually clicked it.
- Average Google Search CTR is 3–5% for top positions; Display CTR is 0.1%; Email CTR is 2–5%; organic search CTR for position 1 is 25–30%.
- CTR is not a goal — it's a diagnostic. High CTR with low conversion rate means your ad attracted the wrong people. Low CTR with high conversion rate means you need more reach.
- The headline is responsible for 80% of CTR performance. Writing 5–10 headline variations and A/B testing is the highest-leverage activity to improve CTR.

CTR Formula — Three Directions
Mode 1 — Calculate CTR: CTR (%) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100
Mode 2 — Calculate Clicks: Clicks = Impressions × (CTR ÷ 100)
Mode 3 — Calculate Impressions needed: Impressions = Clicks ÷ (CTR ÷ 100)
Worked Examples
Example 1: Facebook ad: 4,50,000 impressions, 2,700 clicks. CTR = (2,700 ÷ 4,50,000) × 100 = 0.60%
Example 2 — Traffic planning: Need 10,000 clicks. Expected CTR: 2.5%. Impressions needed = 10,000 ÷ 0.025 = 4,00,000 impressions
Example 3 — Email campaign: Sent to 25,000 subscribers. 875 clicked. CTR = (875 ÷ 25,000) × 100 = 3.5%

Position in organic search results has a dramatic impact on CTR — arguably more important than rankings alone:
| SERP Position | Average CTR |
|---|---|
| 1 | 27.6% |
| 2 | 15.8% |
| 3 | 11.0% |
| 4 | 8.0% |
| 5 | 6.3% |
| 6 | 4.9% |
| 7 | 3.9% |
| 8 | 3.3% |
| 9 | 2.7% |
| 10 | 2.4% |
| Page 2 (avg) | 0.5–1% |
The gap between position 1 and position 3 is enormous — position 1 gets 2.5× more clicks than position 3 on the same query. This is why SEOs obsess over the difference between rank 3 and rank 1.
CTR Killers and Fixers
For Google Search Ads
Killers:
- Generic headline ("Services Available Here")
- No numbers or specifics ("Great Quality" vs. "4.8★ Rated")
- Missing call-to-action
- Ad shown for irrelevant queries (negative keyword gaps)
Fixers:
- Include keyword in Headline 1
- Add price, rating, or offer in description
- Use all available extensions (sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets)
- Test responsive search ads with 10–15 headline variations
- Use emotional triggers: urgency ("Limited Offer"), social proof ("10,000+ Customers"), specificity ("Save 34%")
For Email
Subject line drives 60% of email CTR. Fixers:
- Personalisation: "[First Name], your June report is ready"
- Curiosity gap: "The one thing stopping your ads from working"
- Specificity: "3 steps to reduce your CPC by 40%"
- Avoid spam triggers: "FREE!!!", ALL CAPS, excessive punctuation
For Organic Search (Meta Title/Description)
Fixers:
- Include the exact search keyword in the title tag
- Write the meta description as a mini-ad — what will the user gain by clicking?
- Add the current year to titles for freshness signal: "Best EMI Calculators 2025"
- Use numbers: "7 Ways to..." consistently outperforms generic titles
CTR vs. Impression Share vs. Conversion Rate
CTR sits in the middle of the ad funnel:
Impressions → CTR → Clicks → CVR → Conversions → CPA
High CTR + Low CVR: Creatively compelling but wrong audience, or misleading ad promise. Fix: tighten targeting or align ad promise with landing page.
Low CTR + High CVR: Strong landing page but weak ad. Fix: improve creative, test new headlines.
Low CTR + Low CVR: Both creative and landing page need work — or audience is wrong.
The ideal: Moderate CTR (right audience, honest promise) + High CVR (landing page delivers on promise).
