Conversion Rate Calculator: CVR Formula, Benchmarks & CRO That Actually Works
- Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Total Visitors) × 100. A 2% e-commerce conversion rate means 2 out of every 100 visitors buy.
- Average e-commerce conversion rate globally is 2–4%; India typically runs 1–2.5% due to trust factors and payment friction. SaaS free trial to paid conversion averages 15–25%.
- Doubling conversion rate from 1% to 2% doubles revenue from the same traffic — same CAC, double the output. CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) is the highest-ROI marketing activity most businesses ignore.
- The single biggest conversion killer in India: payment failure rates of 15–25% on non-UPI methods. Prioritising UPI and reducing checkout steps typically lifts conversion by 0.5–1.5%.

Conversion Rate Formula — Three Directions
Mode 1 — Calculate Conversion Rate: CVR (%) = (Conversions ÷ Total Visitors) × 100
Mode 2 — Calculate Conversions: Conversions = Visitors × (CVR ÷ 100)
Mode 3 — Calculate Traffic Needed: Visitors Needed = Target Conversions ÷ (CVR ÷ 100)
Worked Examples
Example 1: E-commerce site: 45,000 visitors/month, 810 purchases. CVR = (810 ÷ 45,000) × 100 = 1.80%
Example 2 — Revenue modelling: Current: 30,000 visitors/month, 2.1% CVR, ₹1,500 AOV Current revenue = 30,000 × 0.021 × ₹1,500 = ₹9,45,000
Improved CVR to 2.8% (no change in traffic): New revenue = 30,000 × 0.028 × ₹1,500 = ₹12,60,000 Revenue increase: ₹3,15,000/month from CVR alone
Example 3 — Traffic planning: Sales target: 500 orders. Expected CVR: 1.8%. Traffic needed = 500 ÷ 0.018 = 27,778 visitors

This is why CRO is the best investment most businesses aren't making:
E-commerce: 40,000 visitors/month, ₹1,800 AOV
| CVR | Monthly Orders | Monthly Revenue | Revenue vs. 1% baseline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0% | 400 | ₹7,20,000 | Baseline |
| 1.5% | 600 | ₹10,80,000 | +₹3,60,000 (+50%) |
| 2.0% | 800 | ₹14,40,000 | +₹7,20,000 (+100%) |
| 2.5% | 1,000 | ₹18,00,000 | +₹10,80,000 (+150%) |
| 3.0% | 1,200 | ₹21,60,000 | +₹14,40,000 (+200%) |
Moving from 1% to 2% CVR doubles revenue with zero additional traffic or ad spend. Every rupee spent on CRO has compounding returns — it makes every other marketing channel more efficient simultaneously.
Top Conversion Killers (India-Specific)
1. Payment friction
- UPI dominates India (60%+ transactions) — UPI not prominently offered = huge drop-off
- Net banking failure rates: 15–25% on certain banks
- Fix: Default to UPI, offer GPay/PhonePe/Paytm prominently, reduce payment form fields
2. Mobile experience
- 70%+ of Indian e-commerce traffic is mobile — poor mobile UX kills conversions
- Fix: Test on low-end Android devices, ensure <3s load time on 4G, simplify checkout to 2–3 steps
3. Trust signals absent
- Indian buyers have high purchase anxiety online, especially for new brands
- Fix: Display COD option prominently, add genuine customer reviews with photos, show return policy on product page (not just footer)
4. Price concern
- Indians are highly price-sensitive and comparison-shop
- Fix: Show savings prominently (original price crossed out), display price per unit for bulk, add EMI option for items above ₹3,000
5. Slow page speed
- Every 1-second delay reduces conversion by approximately 7%
- Fix: Compress images to WebP, use CDN, remove unnecessary plugins/scripts
CRO Testing Framework: What to Test First
High impact, low effort (start here):
- CTA button text and colour
- Headline on landing page
- Above-the-fold offer/value proposition
- Trust badges placement
- UPI/payment method prominence
High impact, higher effort:
- Landing page full redesign
- Checkout flow simplification
- Product page layout (image placement, review position)
- Pricing page restructure
Minimum viable test:
- 1,000 visitors per variation (minimum)
- 95% statistical significance before calling winner
- Test one element at a time (A/B, not multivariate until you have sufficient traffic)
- Tools: Google Optimize (free), VWO, Optimizely (paid)
