Age Grade Calculator: What Class Should My Child Be In? India School Guide
- In India, the standard school entry age is 6 years for Class 1 — children born between June 1 and May 31 of the previous academic year are eligible for the new academic year starting April/June.
- Most Indian states now follow NEP 2020's 5+3+3+4 structure (Foundational, Preparatory, Middle, Secondary) instead of the traditional 10+2 structure — though implementation is still rolling out.
- Age-grade mismatch happens when students start school late, repeat a class (detained), or change boards/systems (CBSE/ICSE/State board) — our calculator accounts for all these scenarios.
- For international school systems: the calculation differs significantly — US kindergarten entry at age 5, UK at age 4–5, Singapore at age 6 — all with different academic year start dates.
Use our free Age Grade Calculator to find the expected class/grade for any child's age, in any school system — India (CBSE/ICSE/State), US, UK, or international.

Age Cutoff Rules by State/Board
The entry age cutoff date varies by state — this is a critical detail many parents miss:
| State / Board | Class 1 Entry Age | Cutoff Date |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi (DDA/DOE schools) | Completed 6 years | March 31 |
| Maharashtra | Completed 6 years | June 15 |
| Karnataka | Completed 5 years 6 months | June 1 |
| Tamil Nadu | Completed 6 years | June 1 |
| Kerala | Completed 6 years | June 1 |
| Uttar Pradesh | Completed 6 years | March 31 |
| CBSE (private schools) | Completed 6 years | Typically March 31 or April 1 |
| ICSE (CISCE schools) | Completed 5.5–6 years | Varies by school |
Example: A child born on April 15, 2019:
- In Delhi (cutoff March 31): Turns 6 on April 15, 2025 — NOT eligible for Class 1 in April 2025. Eligible from April 2026.
- In Karnataka (cutoff June 1): Turns 6 on April 15, 2025 — IS eligible for Class 1 in June 2025.
The same child is in different classes depending on the state! This is one of the most common sources of confusion when families relocate across states.
NEP 2020: The New Structure Explained
The National Education Policy 2020 restructures schooling into 5+3+3+4:
| Stage | Classes | Age | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundational | Nursery–Class 2 (5 years total) | 3–8 years | Play-based learning, mother tongue, foundational literacy |
| Preparatory | Class 3–5 (3 years) | 8–11 years | Formal subjects begin, activity-based |
| Middle | Class 6–8 (3 years) | 11–14 years | Experiential learning, vocational exposure |
| Secondary | Class 9–12 (4 years) | 14–18 years | Multi-disciplinary, critical thinking |
Status of implementation (2025): NEP 2020 is being rolled out gradually. The 5+3+3+4 framework is being adopted by NCERT and central schools (Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, CBSE). State schools are in various stages of transition.
Key change for parents: Under NEP, Class 1 is now part of the "Foundational" stage alongside kindergarten — not a sharp transition. This means Class 1 continues play-based learning rather than immediately shifting to formal academics.
Age Grade for International School Systems
For families relocating internationally or comparing systems:
| Country | School Start Age | Grade Name | Age 10 Grade | Age 15 Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | 6 years | Class | Class 5 | Class 10 |
| USA | 5 years (Kindergarten) | Grade | Grade 4 | Grade 9 |
| UK | 4–5 years | Year | Year 5 | Year 10 |
| Singapore | 6 years | Primary | Primary 4 | Secondary 3 |
| Australia | 5 years | Year | Year 5 | Year 9 |
| UAE (Indian Curriculum) | 6 years | Class | Class 4 | Class 9 |
| Canada | 5–6 years | Grade | Grade 4–5 | Grade 9–10 |
India to US grade equivalency:
| India Class | US Grade | Typical Age |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | Grade 1 (or Kindergarten) | 6 years |
| Class 5 | Grade 4–5 | 10 years |
| Class 10 | Grade 9–10 | 15 years |
| Class 12 | Grade 11–12 | 17 years |
Note: Because US school starts at age 5 (kindergarten) and India at age 6 (Class 1), an Indian student moving to the US may be placed one grade lower than their Indian class number — depending on the school's assessment.
Age Grade Calculator: Accounting for Variations
For Detained Students (Failed + Repeated a Year)
If a student repeated a class once: Expected age = Standard age + 1 year A 16-year-old in Class 10 (standard age 15) has likely repeated one year.
For Early Entrants
Some private schools admit students at 5 years 6 months for Class 1, making them a year younger than their standard cohort: A 14-year-old in Class 10 = entered school at age 5 or 5.5 years (early entry).
For Gap Year Students (Between Class 12 and College)
After Class 12 at age 17–18, many Indian students take 1–2 year drops for JEE/NEET preparation: A 20-year-old entering first year engineering is typical — not unusual.
Right to Education Act: Age and Admission
The RTE Act 2009 guarantees free and compulsory education for children aged 6–14 years (Classes 1–8). Key provisions:
- No entrance test or donation for admission to any school for Classes 1–8
- Age-appropriate admission: Children above 6 years who haven't started school can be admitted to age-appropriate class (not necessarily Class 1)
- 25% EWS seats: All private unaided schools must reserve 25% of seats for economically weaker section children
- No detention till Class 8 (under original RTE — some states have since amended this to allow detention from Class 5 or 8)
